Challenge

Comcast Center, Philadelphia, PAComcast Center is a skyscraper in Center City, Philadelphia, PA. The 58-story, 975-feet tower is the tallest building in Philadelphia and the fifteenth tallest building in the United States. The building’s owners wanted to develop it with sustainability and energy efficiency in mind, and also to provide the building operator with the ability to heat and cool the facility in the most cost effective manner.

Veolia Energy’s solution

  • Steam from Veolia Energy's heating and cooling network in Philadelphia is utilized for cooling as part of a hybrid chilled water plant.
  • By introducing a steam absorption chiller, the operator can select steam as an energy source during summer months in order to decrease peak power consumption and reduce electrical demand charges.
  • In addition, steam from Veolia Energy's network is also used to heat building common areas and to preheat all office ventilation air.

Results

  • Veolia Energy’s solutions contributed to the Comcast Center becoming the tallest Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified building in the United States.
